Hello from Spatial Media...
we have loads of LBS related updates since last week, including details of a new application from WorldMate for Blackberry users. WorldMate "Live" is a monthly service that frequent travelers will love. Itinerary management and synchronization, travel content and basic push services are but some of the offerings of this popular business application. Speaking of Blackberry devices, the City of Mobile, Alabama has procured Freeance Mobile software for putting service orders in the field using BlackBerry smartphones. The City will also use Freeance Mobile for viewing GIS maps published by ESRI’s ArcGIS Server... this is a fine model for other cities to emulate! Any UIQ device users out there? DataViz has announced the availability of its Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync client, RoadSync, for Motorola’s Symbian UIQ based, multimedia slider phone, the MOTO Z8 - the "Z8" is one of the latest smartphones hitting the market offering a symbian UIQ-based UI. Developers interested in more compelling content might consider the latest from Tele Atlas - using the company's 3D landmarks and elevation models, developers can add recognizable building representations that enhance screen images in in-car and portable navigation systems - imagine a 3D rendering of Fenway Park in your mobile concierge or ticket purchasing app?? I couldn't help notice that Andrew Seybold's most recent "Commentary Newsletter" has a strong focus on LBS. Andy discusses why the adoption has been relatively slow, simply put, people are leery of giving up their location. I also like this quote from Seybold... "One of the hot areas in the wireless industry today is the marriage of wireless devices with location-based services (LBS)." If you plan on heading to CTIA in San Fran next month you can hear directly from Seybold at SiRFecosystem’s Location 2.0 Summit (not affiliated with CTIA Wireless) scheduled for Tuesday Oct 23 - see details HERE.
Finally, a tip... did U-Know if you subscribe to a mobile data plan (like a T-Mobile data plan) you not only have access to all the mobile data your cell phone can eat but you can access any T-Mobile hotspot from your notebook as well!

Mobile Mapping with ESRI's ArcPad 7.1 -
We recently sat in on an intro session focused on ESRI's extension of GIS beyond the office and into a mobile environment. Why mobile GIS?? Addressing the need to take GIS into the field to enable timely, relevant, and accurate decisions. Making real-time decisions in the field enables more collaboration between the field and the office. Makes sense to me... of particluar interest in this space is the coming release of ESRI's ArcPad 7.1.
