The Editor Glenn Letham Hello from Spatial Media... Welcome to the first official drop of our "LBSzone Alert" Newsletter... we're pleased to be Delivering information on Location to your desktop. As many of you know, LBSzone has been around for several years now (the site actually was developed pre-GISuser), however, we've been waiting for just the right time to launch our electronic update focused on location-based services (LBS)... that time is NOW! I don't need to tell you that the LBS space is ripe; just look around you and you'll find dozens of developer programs focused on the delivery of apps and services based on location.

Even research giants have been recently touching on the topic of location and the rapid uptake of location-aware services around the Globe. Case in Point, Research in Markets have released a report on GPS usage in China. According to the report, Nokia, Motorola, and smaller domestic companies, like Lenovo and Bird, have introduced or will introduce a series of GPS-enabled models this year. This all bodes well for developers that are harnessing the power of location in their apps. Here in North America, Sprint has touted GPS-enabled devices and LBS for some time now. More recently, Nokia has finally targeted the US with the launch of the GPS-enabled N95 smartphone - the first of many more GPS-enabled devices from the largest supplier of cell phones (and digital cameras) in the World. Are you chasing the LBS space and looking for a kick-start? You might think about this year's LBS Challenge - EMEA applications are now being accepted while the Americas Registration opened officially on September 14. Then there's the WHERE Developer Contest. Open to anyone (you don't have to be a hard-core developer here), simply take your idea and run with it. You could win some cash and a chance to shmooze with some VCs. Another great opportunity for developers exists with the Tele Atlas Maps in Apps Contest - registration closes Sept. 30 so you better act now! This contest is for consumer and business applications that are not LBS focused, but include mapping or location as a functionality enhancement. Finally, some great opportunities to learn more about the power of location in your mobile apps is the deCarta devcon, slated for Nov 13-15 in beautiful San Francisco, CA. - this event is a must consider for LBS application developers. Also, one more tip for those interested in the LBS space is the first LBS Location 2.0 Summit (an invite only event) taking place Oct. 23 in San Fran (coinciding with CTIA Wireless). The event is being put on by SiRF ecosystems and will feature speakers from SiRF, Verizon, Navteq, Orange, and Wayfinder.

Until next week, we hope you enjoyed this first edition of "LBSzone Alert"... don't worry, I won't be rambling on this much all the time ;0)
