Glenn Hello from the Spatial Media LBSzone... Obviously, topping the LBS news today is word of the Nokia / NAVTEQ deal being finalized by the EC. One final note... I see that Starbucks is streamlining operations somewhat and closing up about 5% of their shops. I can't help wonder if technology would have been the answer. Myself, I frequent cooler places that serve much better coffee, in a better environment, and offering free use of PCs (and Macs) along with FREE Wi-Fi. Too bad but it was bound to happen! From team Nokia... "We welcome this news. NAVTEQ will play a key role in our Internet services strategy with world-leading maps and navigation industry expertise, a strong customer base and industry-leading map data and technology platform offering the broadest geographical coverage," said Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo, President and CEO, Nokia. Given Symbian's dominant share of the mobile OS space, Nokia's creation of the Symbian foundation, and the addition of NAVTEQ to the mix, this acquisition will no doubt dominate the year's TOP stories at year-end. With the usage of wireless data no soaring, particularly in the US, you can 't help that eventually we'll start seeing many more Symbian powered smartphones hitting the US - that is if consumers ever manage to figure out where they can get them! Recently, a blogosphere colleague of mine, who is very technology savvy, actually said to me that he'd never [knowingly] seen a Symbian smartphone - that has to tell you something. If you need to get up to speed on the Symbian OS then I suggest you check out SymbianOne.com, Allaboutsymbian.com, darlamack.com, symbian.com, and S60.com... oh, and don't foprget about LBSzone.com! Have a great day and a fantastic 4th! My mobile app tip for the day is Ovi Share from Nokia, see share.ovi.com
