The

Editor Glenn Letham Hello from the Spatial Media LBSzone... This week we've finalized our coverage from the Nokia World event with highlights and a look at the winning apps from the Open C Challenge - check out these apps as developers competed in a race to port apps to to Symbian S60 environment... all the apps were done in a very timely manner and all the winners have received interest from third parties and carriers! You still think these contests are a waste of time... I'd think again! Speaking of contests, Nominations are now open for the Andrew Seybold Choice Awards 2008, winners to be announced at CTIA Wireless this Spring in Vegas. Developers in Canada take note of the news from NAVTEQ (See below), the company has partnered with Wavefront, a new not-for-profit organization in British Columbia that provides test and commercialization services to developers of mobile applications (details below). Finally, kudos to AT&T Inc. who this week announced the availability of interoperable radio frequency identification (RFID) and GPS-based mobile resource management (MRM) solutions for the K - 12 education segment. These applications enable K - 12 institutions to track school bus locations, monitor their speed and condition while on the road and report on events within vehicles. Speaking of tracking, you might want to check out one of our features below for details of a clever, fun mashup with a mobile client that enables you to see a taxi route and estmated fee - the service, TaxiWiz, is available for users in 9 major cities - a great app and one that needs to be entered in a contest! Have a great day and Happy Holidays to all... your next LBSzone Alert will come sometime between now and the New Year so stay tuned.

PS: my quote of the day goes to the developer of the almost cool WhereBoutz app - from the developer regarding the mobile client... "BREW, BlackBerry, Windows Mobile, Palm, Symbian, and iPhone devices are NOT supported at this time"

Location-aware app, TaxiWiz provides estimates on a taxi route and fare... very clever!

Nokia Open C Challenge Opens Opportunities For Mobile Developers - At this year's Nokia World event in Amsterdam, Nokia and partners announced the winners of this year's Open C Challenge - the contest invited developers to create and port their applications to S60 or create and develop a native application using S60 and Open C. The developers ported thousands of lines of code in a relatively short time to create some amazing applications. See the apps, hear their story and get more info on Open C...

Spotlight on Mashups... TaxiWiz - what a clever mashup and a fine mobile app. TaxiWiz is now available for 9 major cities (New York, San Diego, Vancouver, Toronto...) and hopefully more soon! Enter a start point and destination and taxiwiz routes you on Google maps, predicts a fare, suggests a tip and even can provide directions and routing - this is awesome! Using the PC version simply click a start and end point on the Google map and your route is traced. You are then presented with distance of trip, suggested taxi fee + tip, and then optional routing directions. The site also offers taxi tips to users as a handy extra.
