CARDIFF, Wales May 2, 2006-- Ubiquity Developer Network (UDN) Provides Commercial Ecosystem for ISVs, Developers, Systems Integrators, Network Equipment Vendors and Service Providers
Ubiquity Software (LSE:UBQ), creators of the most widely adopted standards-based, carrier-grade SIP Application Server (SIP A/S), today announced the launch of the Ubiquity Developer Network (UDN), the industry's first community of developers, Ubiquity partners and customers with a common interest in exploiting the commercial opportunities for new services based on the Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) standard. UDN will shorten time-to-market and expand the availability of a broader range of new multimedia Internet applications, such as Voice over IP, multiplayer gaming, and location-based services.
SIP has become accepted as a mature and commercially-viable Internet Protocol (IP) standard that is being widely adopted by global carriers and large enterprises that plan to deploy a new generation of converged services. The creation of UDN fills a gap in the market for new SIP applications and demonstrates Ubiquity's commitment to provide an open forum to drive the creation of SIP applications for today's fixed line and wireless applications, and emerging IP Multimedia Service (IMS) networks. Ubiquity has established an online community for UDN at www.developer.ubiquitysoftware.com.
"Through the creation of UDN, Ubiquity expands its leadership role in commercializing SIP technology, and promoting new applications that accelerate time-to-market while increasing the value of our own proven SIP Application Server," said Ian McLaren, President and CEO of Ubiquity Software. "UDN is the first such community to connect Service Providers with developers in this type of open forum. UDN is filling a valuable role in the industry by fostering creation of new multimedia IP services. No other forum leverages the skills of ISVs, technology partners, systems integrators and developers to create this new generation of SIP-based applications."
Ubiquity has enlisted a diverse range of key partners and customers as charter members, including Network Equipment Vendors (NEVs), System Integrators (SIs), Complementary Technology Partners (CTPs), Independent Software Vendors (ISVs), and Service Providers (SPs) (in alphabetical order):
Over 30 companies have signed up to be charter members of the Ubiquity Developer Network.
The worldwide market for SIP infrastructure and software is expected to exceed USD 5.5 billion by 2007 with a compound annual growth rate of 36.1 percent according to estimates by Venture Development Corporation (VDC). According to VDC's report, factors driving the SIP market include replacement of the existing infrastructure by service providers and large enterprises; the explosive growth of VoIP; and the growth of new applications such as new presence, location, and video applications.
"UDN certainly represents a great initiative that will spearhead the development of next-generation SIP-based applications within the IMS framework," said Ronald F. Gruia, Senior Telecom Analyst with Frost & Sullivan. "By gathering all the members of the value chain, UDN will be able to both combine and create new IMS services that will lead to higher ARPU for fixed, mobile and cable operators."
Commentary from UDN Members
"We support the mission of UDN, focused on the expansion and acceleration of SIP applications development to fulfill the need for innovative convergent services to be delivered by the world leading telecom service providers," said Allison McAfrey, Global Delivery Director, CGI. "Bringing developers, systems integrators and equipment providers together with a common focus on creating compelling new services makes perfect sense. Through this cooperative ecosystem formed around UDN, developers will be empowered with a range of resources that facilitate application development on our combined platforms, giving service providers access to a wider range of compelling new services."
"Developing converged applications with web and real-time telephony services is the next logical step for both the Java development community and telecommunications industry," said Shaun Connolly, Vice President, Product Management, JBoss, Inc. "Ubiquity's open standards-based SIP Application Server, through UDN, is well positioned to enable service providers to capitalize on the abundance of talent and innovation in the open source community. Through JBoss' participation in UDN, developers can leverage a market leading J2EE-certified platform for compelling converged applications that fulfill service provider needs."
"We applaud the formation of the Ubiquity Developers Network, and its goal of exploiting commercial opportunities for new SIP-based services," said John Emery, vice president, business development, Cantata Technology. "To accelerate the creation of a new generation of SIP- and IMS-based applications, Cantata is offering developers resources through UDN for our SnowShore IP Media Server, including a special free of charge license, to develop new SIP-driven applications such as voice and video messaging, conferencing, multi-player gaming and other multimedia applications."
The UDN Web Portal
To support the SIP applications development community, Ubiquity has launched the UDN web portal located at www.developer.ubiquitysoftware.com. The UDN website provides access to resources for applications developers, including developer forums, technical information, tips and training, software developer tools, libraries, code samples and templates, and testing facilities designed to accelerate SIP development. In addition, developers who are UDN members also will gain access to business development opportunities, such as business cases and RFQs/RFPs issued by carriers for applications development and integration services associated with planned trials and commercial deployments.
Through UDN, Ubiquity will build on its history of leadership established through the SIP Center, a web portal focused on the commercial development of SIP. To date, more than 8,000,000 SIP calls have been placed by thousands of developers around the world through the SIP Center Network Server, a hosted SIP testing platform using Ubiquity's SIP A/S.
Ubiquity's SOA and Developer Tools
The launch of the UDN builds on Ubiquity's developer strategy, following the recent announcement of Ubiquity's Appcelerator Service Oriented Architecture (SOA), developer tools for Ubiquity's "open" SIP A/S platform. Appcelerator provides a unique SOA development environment on top of the Ubiquity JSR116-compliant SIP Servlet Container for unparalleled system performance and efficiency. Additionally, Ubiquity Developer Studio (UDS), in conjunction with the Appcelerator product set, provides a unified set of tools that enable highly modular application and services development. Ubiquity Developer Edition (UDE) provides developers with a development version of Ubiquity's award-winning SIP A/S to simplify development, testing and debugging of applications built on the Ubiquity SIP A/S.
Ubiquity's SIP Application Server (SIP A/S)
Ubiquity's SIP A/S is an "open", standards-based service creation platform that has been selected by carriers to enable the rapid development and deployment of a broad range of advanced communications services. SIP A/S is a high-performance software platform designed specifically for telecommunications applications to allow carriers to offer innovative voice, data, and video services. The SIP A/S offers a programmable, horizontal platform that makes it easy to add new features and applications to carrier networks.
