Flexible, Affordable Annual Licenses Enable Advanced, Accurate Location Intelligence Across Academic Disciplines
TROY, N.Y.-- Feb. 13, 2006--MapInfo Corporation (NASDAQ: MAPS), the leading global provider of location intelligence solutions, today announced a new academic licensing program for its core data products. The new annual license packages provide detailed, up-to-date geographic data sets in lab, class and site configurations, enabling greater flexibility and usability in any educational setting.
MapInfo software and data packages have long been utilized in colleges and universities throughout the world for teaching location intelligence technology within core GIS and science curricula. More recently, courses in public administration, healthcare, human services, marketing and supply chain management are promoting the value of location intelligence. The new data packages provide accurate, up-to-date data sets for varying geographic areas, ranging from single-state data points to nationwide coverage. The annual data licenses are available in MapInfo(R) StreetInfo/MapMarker or MapInfo(R) StreetPro/MapMarker Plus bundles.
"Affordable access to hands-on technology in the classroom is becoming exponentially more critical as universities and colleges continue to bridge the gap between academic theory and practical application," said Sabby Nayar, education program manager for MapInfo. "MapInfo's new educational data licenses provide the hands-on tools students need to tackle real world problems, using the same up-to-the-minute global data and advanced location intelligence technology used by businesses and organizations today."
Universities and colleges across the country that integrate MapInfo location intelligence technology into classroom instruction and coursework include Columbia University, Princeton University, Carnegie Mellon University, New York University, Northeastern University, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, The State University of New York, UCLA and St. John's University.
"Hands-on, real-world tools are a critical part of truly learning in any curriculum," said Louis Morin, instructor of forestry at the University of Maine. "Data management, analysis and presentation are always the biggest challenges students face, from first years through Ph.D. candidates. By empowering them with MapInfo location intelligence software, students can tackle these problems with the best tools available on the market, rather than learning simply through observation."
"MapInfo is an extremely valuable tool for not only my own research on urban economic trends, but also for enabling my economics graduate students to conduct their own primary research with the best tools available," said Stuart Rosenthal, professor, Department of Economics and Center for Policy Research at Syracuse University's Maxwell School. "Just as good science research requires powerful investigative tools, the solutions to complex economic questions are not always obvious on the surface. With MapInfo, the ability to observe and analyze spatial patterns enables us to uncover and investigate demographic and sociological trends crucial to economic phenomena that might otherwise go unnoticed. Ultimately, location intelligence tools like MapInfo are invaluable for the type of work that my students and I do."
