FRAMINGHAM, Mass.--Nov. 28, 2005--Smartphone users can now take advantage of new mapping technologies and local search to find people, places, events and share user-generated content as a result of uLocate Communications' acquisition of Kmaps (http://www.alealea.com). Kmaps is available today on Treo devices and will soon be available on the Blackberry as well as other platforms.
"The acquisition of Kmaps supports our continued expansion into next-generation location-based services," said Walt Doyle, President and CEO of uLocate. "With this acquisition, we expand our technology platform, reach a large and affluent audience of enthusiasts and most importantly, expand our team by adding Kmaps founder Ivan Mitrovic. Ivan is an innovator with great passion and vision across a variety of relevant topics including mobile location-based services, social networking, user-generated content and all things Web 2.0. We are ecstatic to have Ivan's vision, creativity and passion on the uLocate team."
"As a mobile professional, I saw a need for people to be able to connect with others, find places and events and share information while away from their computer," said Kmaps founder and creator Ivan Mitrovic. "The Kmaps community grew quickly, began contributing their own content, developing add-ons using the Kmaps web 2.0 API and requesting enhancements. uLocate has the resources, the team and the vision to rapidly increase the value we provide our current community of users as well as to realize the potential to serve millions of mobile users worldwide."
Treo users can download Kmaps today for free from http://kmaps.ulocate.com, get maps and directions, find local businesses, post and search user profiles and create their own location aware content to share with the community. In addition, Kmaps provides a free web 2.0 API for software developers to create Kmaps add-ons. The plans for Kmaps include rolling it out on several new devices as well as integrating with the uLocate platform to make additional features available to Kmaps users. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.
