The newly formed GIS/LBS Business Interest Group at SDSIC will like to
invite you to its debut event - a panel discussion focused on the full
spectrum of the GIS/LBS technologies.
Learn from our panel of experts from industry and government about
where the GIS/LBS technology is headed in future and hear about how
confluences in advances in various technology fields such as Cloud
Computing, GPS and microprocessor technologies and wireless
communications is influencing the future of GIS. The panel discussion,
titled "From Location Based Services to Cloud Computing: the Future of
GIS" is scheduled on September 29th from 5:30 PM to 7 PM at the Intuit
Campus off of Highway 56.
San Diego, Calif. September 21, 2009 -- GIS stands for geographic
information systems which includes mapping software and its integration
with remote sensing, land surveying, aerial photography, mathematics,
geography, and other tools. For first 40 years of their existence,
Geospatial Information systems and their existence was limited to
scientists working in the areas of land use, agricultural, forestry and
urban planning.
However, A confluence of forces is making GIS technology far more
powerful, appealing, and pervasive--and San Diego's resident expertise
in software development and related technologies is putting the city
near the center of the GIS development map.
"Most people don't know that cell phones were around for 30 years
before they became affordable, useful, and prevalent devices for
ordinary consumers." says Y. P. Talreja, Chair of the SDSIC GIS
Business Interest Group. "Now the same thing is happening with
geographic information systems, or GIS. For decades, it was a very
specialized area, used by the very few. But now, with advances in GPS
and wireless communications technologies and easy availability of
mapping services as part of the new Cloud Computing paradigm, location
based services have reached everywhere."
The newly formed GIS/LBS Business Interest Group within San Diego
Software Industry Council has announced its debut event - a panel
discussion focused on the full spectrum of the GIS/LBS technologies.
The panel discussion, titled "From Location Based Services to Cloud
Computing: the Future of GIS" is scheduled on September 29th from 5:30
PM to 7 PM at the Intuit Campus off of Highway 56. To register for the
event, go to SDSIC Events page at http://www.sdsic.org/events.aspx.
Attendees will learn from our panel of experts from industry,
government and non-profits about where the GIS/LBS technology is headed
in future and hear about how confluences in advances in various fields,
including advent of Cloud Computing in the infrastructure arena,
advances in GPS and microprocessor technologies in the hardware arena,
faster and better collection, storage and retrieval of Geo-spatial data
in the GIS arena and powerful 3G networks in wireless communications
arena is influencing the future of GIS.
Panel discussion will be moderated by Bob Slapin, the Executive
Director of the San Diego Software Industry Council. The Panelists
include Sanjai Kohli, a serial entrepreneur, cofounder and former CTO
of SiRF, a leader in the field of GPS semiconductor and software; Joe
Purohit, the Founder & CEO of EcoLayers, Inc. a company which
provides web-based software services for the land, water and ecology
management; Clint Daniels, the manager of Regional Models at San Diego
Association of Governments and. Andres Abeyta, the President of IGIS
Technologies, Inc. which provides GIS related consulting.
"There is a massive amount of data lying around that is related to
a spot on the map, (environmental, traffic, health)," says Bob Slapin,
executive director of the San Diego Software industry council, "This
data is often in different silos and in most cases making sense of it
requires running around, finding it and mapping it somehow. The data is
often structured and unstructured, meaning software with certain
versatility is required to process it. Our goals is to encourage
development of a whole ecosystem of software companies which is able to
make optimal use of such data."
For additional information and to register for the event, go to
SDSIC Events page at http://www.sdsic.org/events.aspx. The cost is
$35.00 for employees of SDSIC's member companies and $45 for others.
Refreshments will be provided. Parking is Free.
