Opportunities and Reduce Investment Costs for Partners Bringing
Nuance-Compatible Mobile Innovations to Market
Barcelona, Spain (Mobile World Congress), February 17, 2009 - Nuance Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: NUAN), today announced the Nuance Mobile Developers Program, designed to maximize integration opportunities for Nuance Mobile's speech and text frameworks. The Program is optimized for leading-edge integration, platform and OEM partners that develop applications and solutions for mobile and consumer electronic devices. The Nuance Mobile Developers Program establishes an ecosystem of compelling applications by fostering innovative implementations of and seamless integrations with multiple products in Nuance's portfolio.
The Nuance Mobile Developers Program also creates a distribution channel that accelerates revenue growth and reduces investment costs for participating developers. The Program will assist partners in developing demo integrations, as well as offer co-marketing opportunities with Nuance. The Program also serves to generate a pipeline of innovative products and services that may be efficiently bundled with Nuance speech and text input products, increasing the value of the complete mobile platform for operators, OEMs and ultimately the end-user.
Additional Nuance Mobile Developers Program benefits include full access to:
Software Developer Kits (SDKs);
"The Café," Nuance's hosted developer site;
Product and integration training via webinars, workshops and more;
Evaluation support that includes additional languages, integration assistance, extended evaluation periods, product demonstration privileges, and developer tools;
Co-marketing opportunities that include joint promotion and press releases;
And more.
"There is an incredible amount of innovation being created among mobile developers around the world, and we wanted to be sure we provided them with the tools they need and the environment to successfully and rapidly take those innovations to market," said Michael Thompson, senior vice president and general manager, Nuance Mobile. "The Nuance Mobile Developers Program is another step towards our vision of creating an open interface framework that our entire OEM and developer ecosystem may leverage to bring innovative mobile solutions to market in a manner that allows them to establish a sustainable competitive advantage. All parties - developers, operators, and OEMs- can benefit from that."
The Interface Framework component of the Nuance Mobile Developers Program is already attracting the participation of many mobile and consumer electronic developers who wish to take advantage of Nuance's predictive text solutions portfolio.
HanWang Technology, an input solution provider focused on handwriting recognition, optical character recognition, and biometrics; nCore, a provider of advanced user interface tools that enable a consistent text input experience on a variety of platforms; Varia Mobile, a provider of connected media solutions; and, ShapeWriter, Inc., an IBM Research spin-off that developed the innovative handwriting gestures text input for entering text quickly on touch screen devices, all today announced their participation in the Interface Framework Program to develop XT9 compatible technologies.
XT9 is Nuance's pioneering multi-modal user interface solution for feature-rich smartphones and advanced mobile devices that enables users to easily switch between input modes, and alternate between numbers, letters, symbols and languages, making it faster and easier to write text messages and emails.
"HanWang is focused on developing innovative handwriting input solutions for touch screen phones, which are increasing in consumer popularity. Working closely with Nuance to integrate XT9 predictive text, we're able to expand our business opportunities with the world's leading handset OEMs," said Dongjian Xu, vice president, HanWang.
"nCore and Nuance have a common goal," said Tapio Koivuniemi, CEO, nCore. "Both companies are working to bring the best user experience possible to every corner of the globe. Nuance provides us with outstanding language support, and we ensure the results are pixel-perfect with our text rendering solutions."
"ShapeWriter's innovative and patented technology benefits immediately from Nuance's XT9 integration. We now have access to more than 75 new language resources and benefit from Nuance's proven ability to successfully port their solutions to countless mobile platforms and devices," said Wally Greiner, president, ShapeWriter, Inc.
"Varia Mobile selected Nuance's advanced input and search technologies as a way to enhance some of the more advanced features of our products," said John McQueen, president of Varia Mobile. "Varia Mobile's media client brings the full breadth of the Rhapsody music service, as well as a selection of Web 2.0 services, to a broad range of mobile platforms. Incorporating XT9 will make searching for those titles and services easier and faster."
"Varia Mobile has created a premium consumer experience for accessing more than seven million songs in our music catalog from Rhapsody-enabled devices," said Mike Lunsford, executive vice president of strategic ventures, RealNetworks. "Nuance technology will help Varia Mobile deliver the next generation of mobile media search, making our catalog intuitively discoverable on connected devices."
GogoBeans, a mobile content aggregator, also announced today that it has joined the Nuance Mobile Developers Program as part of the Interface Framework offering to expand T9Nav's off- device search and discovery capabilities. Nuance's T9Nav is an innovative search and discovery application for mobile devices that makes applications and services easier to find and use, flattening the user interface with one key press per letter search capabilities.
