Intrinsyc Provides Expertise as North America's first S60 Competence Center to Develop
Device Drivers for WLAN + Bluetooth Single Chip Solution Available in Q1 2009
Mobile World Congress: Barcelona, Spain - February 16, 2009 - Intrinsyc Software International, Inc. (TSX: ICS), a leading provider of software solutions for mobile devices, today announced an engineering services agreement with Marvell (NASDAQ: MRVL), a leader in storage, communications, and consumer silicon solutions. Intrinsyc's Solutions Engineering group will develop S60 device drivers for the Marvell 88W8688 dual-radio WLAN + Bluetooth chip.
The Marvell 88W8688 is the first device to deliver a fully integrated Bluetooth 2.1 EDR baseband/RF and Marvell's market-proven 802.11a/b/g WLAN technology for next generation consumer electronic devices. The Marvell 88W8688 enables a converged WLAN plus Bluetooth subsystem implementation that is up to 50% smaller than discrete implementations. By offering seamless bridging between WiFi and Bluetooth, the Marvell 88W8688 platform ultimately enhances the consumer's experience.
"Several major device OEMs have requested S60 drivers so they can deploy the 88W8688 on handsets running the S60 Symbian environment," said Dr. Partho Mishra Vice President and General Manager, Embedded and Emerging Business Unit, Communications and Consumer Business Group at Marvell Semiconductor, Marvell. "Our decision to work with Intrinsyc was based on several factors. First, we needed an S60 Competence Center with local resources, and Intrinsyc is the most experienced center in North America. We also knew Intrinsyc from past successful engagements with Marvell, as well as Intrinsyc's driver development work for Symbian. We have a great deal of confidence in Intrinsyc's ability to deliver the drivers on time and within budget."
"Within approximately 90 days, we were able to architect, develop, and test S60 WiFi and Bluetooth device drivers for the Marvell 88W8688 dual radio chip," said David Manuel, Vice President & General Manager Solutions Engineering, Intrinsyc. "Our Solutions Engineering group has a premiere driver architecture and systems approach to development that results in high-quality optimized driver code."
Intrinsyc became the first certified S60 Product Creation Community (PCC) Competence Center based in North America in December 2008. S60 licensees and Symbian Foundation members receive on-site and same time-zone engineering services and mobile software solutions from the leading experts in the Symbian operating system. Intrinsyc has been a Symbian Overseas Development Center and Symbian Platinum Partner for more than five years and appointed as a Symbian Competence Center in June 2008. With more than 350,000 hours of Symbian experience, Intrinsyc engineers possess a deep understanding of Symbian technology components. The underlying operating system code developed by Intrinsyc engineers is on every Symbian-based handset shipped since 2005.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
