New deal brokered to allow Samsung users to access IBM mobility software
LOTUSPHERE, ORLANDO, FL. January 21, 2009: Samsung Electronics Research Institute (SERI), the application development arm of Samsung Electronics, today announced the completion of a deal to allow Samsung smartphone users to access IBM's mobility software. Samsung customers with smartphones running on Symbian S60 and Windows Mobile platforms will now have the benefits of increased collaboration while on the go.
Samsung support for IBM Lotus Notes Traveler means that customers will be able to access advanced collaboration tools such as IBM Lotus Notes for real time access to email, calendar, address book, journal and to-do list data. This also represents a significant market opportunity for IBM Lotus Notes -- which has 145 million licensed users -- with many Samsung customers now able to purchase Lotus Notes and access its collaboration capabilities on the go.
The deal will allow an even greater number of current Samsung Mobile users to access their email and share data from their current mobile device. IBM's mobile software is available now for Windows Mobile users and the companies plan for supporting Samsung S60 devices within the first quarter of 2009.
CH Lee, Executive Vice President, Samsung Electronics, said: "This is an important step for Samsung as we are now the only manufacturer supporting IBM Lotus Notes both for Symbian S60 and for Windows Mobile devices. This gives our customers another way to access the potential power inside their Samsung smartphone, through the medium of IBM's great software packages. We look forward to Samsung users getting the best experience from this software and enhanced mobile working capabilities, and developers experiencing another channel to create new mobile applications."
"The availability of our Lotus Notes Traveler for Samsung S60 and Windows Mobile devices will allow mobile workers to achieve maximum productivity, regardless of their location. We're delighted that users will be able to reap the benefits of our latest technology, making information gathering and the business process as simple and effective as possible." said Kevin Cavanaugh, vice president of IBM Lotus Software.
