According to the CHP, drivers who get caught one handed will now pay $76 for first time violations and $190 for additional offenses. English and Spanish speaking drivers now have an alternative to touch typing while driving. Call 1-877-SayType.
In 2006, the CTIA reported 81 billion total text messages sent in the U.S. The U.S. Department of Transportation reported that 16-24 year olds accounted for 385,167 driving injuries and 13,740 deaths in 2006. The New York Times reported the largest texting demographic users are 17-24 year olds, 40 percent admit regularly touch texting while driving.
The risk of touch texting accidents is increasing.
In 2008, the CTIA reported 85 billion text messages are now sent each month, a number expected to reach 8 trillion annually by 2014.
Transport Research Laboratory and Clemson University conducted similar in-depth studies of texting while driving last fall:
* Steering control dropped 91 percent.
* Driver's reaction times are 35 percent slower when texting, which was 23 percent slower than drivers at the legal alcohol limit.
* A text message took an average of 63 seconds to compose while driving. In 60 seconds, a vehicle travels half a mile at city speeds.
In 2006, there were 17,602 alcohol-related fatalities in vehicle crashes. Touch texting is more distracting and more common than drinking while driving, but equally as deadly.
