Velocita Wireless Withstands Rita's Wrath; Company's Disaster-Proven Network Remains Operational throughout Hurricanes Katrina and Rita Providing Critical Communications in Gulf Area
WOODBRIDGE, N.J.-- Oct. 4, 2005--Velocita Wireless, L.P., a leading provider of wireless data connectivity for mission-critical applications, today reported that its high-availability, dedicated data network has been operating normally in the areas devastated by Hurricanes Rita and Katrina.
The company noted that the network serving the Texas and Louisiana gulf coast area impacted by Rita has been operating normally as of 5 PM, EDT, Wednesday, September 28. At the height of Hurricane Rita, the company's high-availability, data-only network remained operational with approximately 85% of normal network coverage. The network continues to be utilized by customers, relief and emergency organizations communicating critical information within the impacted region, including the hard-hit areas of Beaumont, New Orleans, Port Arthur, Lake Charles and Lafayette.
"Coming right on the heels of Katrina, our strong network performance within Rita's path substantiates the inherent stability and resiliency of our network technology during times of crisis as well as the diligence of our disaster-tested field employees who kept the network up and operational for customers throughout the storm," said Paul Miller, chief operating officer at Velocita Wireless.
In preparation for the storm, the company mobilized and repositioned key support and engineering personnel to Texas along with substantial inventories of generators, mobile satellite equipment, cell sites on wheels (COWs), satellite phones, fuel and emergency supplies to restore service and make repairs as needed. Regularly updated coverage maps, depicting the latest operational status of the Velocita Wireless network in the Texas and Louisiana region, were also posted to the Velocita Wireless website, www.velocitawireless.com, for customer use.
Katrina Update
In addition to its restoration efforts in the areas affected by Rita, Velocita today reported that it also has restored network operations to normal levels in areas impacted by Hurricane Katrina. Even during the height of the storm and resulting flood, the network was operational and providing 80% of normal coverage within the region and was quickly restored to over 95% of normal network coverage, within days. This level of sustained connectivity allowed numerous customers, partners and organizations such as the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, BellSouth, Discrete Wireless, TCS, and the Port Authority of New York, which had nine first responders in the New Orleans area to help with the restoration, exchange critical information, in real time, over the company's dedicated data network.
"Velocita's network was operable immediately after the storm, and the network has been used extensively by other carriers for data communications trying to repair and re-deploy their infrastructure in the days since," said Jeffery Thacher, President of Discrete Wireless, Inc., a leading provider of GPS Fleet Management Systems and long-time Velocita partner. Discrete Wireless had previously reported that as of September 18, 95% of its many customers within the Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama region were fully operational utilizing the company's Marcus GPS Fleet Management System, powered by the Velocita Wireless dedicated data network.
