SAN FRANCISCO, CA -- 06/16/08 -- Weather Underground, the nation's first
online weather service, today announced the availability of a new online product
on its web site, www.wunderground.com, that
displays flood alerts for rivers across the United States.
Using data from the USGS (the US Geological Survey), the product plots river
data and forecasts on top of an interactive map. Users can scroll across the
country and zoom in and out to view in-depth observations from all major rivers
in the US. Alternatively, one can click an option to view only the rivers with
current flood alerts.
Each river observation is color coordinated to reflect its dry/wet percentile
and users can click on each observation point to view data and graphs that
display Flow Rate, Percentile, Current Stage, Forecast Stage and Flood Stage.
Flood Alert symbols will appear on every river icon whenever a river is in
danger of flooding.
Users can go straight to the product via the url www.wunderground.com/wundermap/rivers. Alternatively, one can
navigate to it from the homepage by clicking on the WunderMap(TM) and selecting
the USGS layer.
"We have created this product to help communities in the US threatened by
flooding," said Alan Steremberg, President and co-founder of Weather
Underground. "People will easily be able to find the data they need to assess
the threat to their homes and businesses. We have brought the product to market
as quickly as possible in light of the many flood alerts currently in place in
the middle of the country."
This product is a new layer that has been added as a further option to
Weather Underground's WunderMap(TM), the most user-friendly and interactive
weather map on the Web. The WunderMap(TM) is a visual display of weather layers
that are plotted and overlaid on a map interface. Users can choose from a
variety of layers including current conditions, animated radar, severe weather
and tornado warnings, live webcam images and animated infrared or visible
satellite imagery showing cloud coverage.
