TeleCommunication Systems Expands Relationship With nTelos Wireless to Provide Commercial and Emergency Location-Based Services
nTelos Broadens Services Portfolio With Addition of Rand McNally Navigator(R); Extends E9-1-1 Services Contract
ANNAPOLIS, MD, Mar 20, 2008 (MARKET WIRE via COMTEX News Network) -- TeleCommunication Systems, Inc. (TCS) (NASDAQ: TSYS), a global leader in mission-critical wireless communications, today announced that nTelos is expanding its relationship with TCS to address customer interest in commercial location-based services. Under a three-year contract, the first service nTelos will offer is the location-enabled Rand McNally Navigator(R) Wireless application developed by TCS. nTelos also today announced that it is extending its enhanced emergency wireless (E9-1-1) contract with TCS for an additional three years.
nTelos is the first Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) carrier to launch the location-enabled version of the Rand McNally Navigator wireless application, which allows users to access real time voice based turn-by-turn directions from their mobile devices as well as easily find points-of-interest and navigate to that location. Subscribers can select a variety of navigation views, including turn-by-turn and map views. They can save their favorite and recent places, airports and specific locations. In addition, users whose wireless devices include Global Positioning System (GPS) capabilities can rely on Rand McNally Navigator Wireless to find and display their exact locations in real time. TCS is Rand McNally's strategic mobile applications partner for Rand McNally branded Navigator, StreetFinder and Traffic applications.
"Based on our existing E9-1-1 relationship with TCS and their national leadership in providing location-based services, it is only logical for us to use our trusted partner to roll out this new commercial location-enabled maps, directions and points-of-interest mobile application," said Rob Cale, nTelos Vice President of Marketing. "We are dedicated to providing our loyal customer base with best-in-class emergency location services available and believe that the Rand McNally Navigator service meets their initial demands for a commercial location application. We look forward to a long-term relationship with TCS in providing customers life-saving E9-1-1 services as well as additional commercial location-based applications."
Under this contract, nTelos purchased Xypoint(R) Location Services and Location-Based Services Roaming from TCS to ensure its customers have precise location mapping and nationwide roaming. This provides nTelos with the infrastructure to rapidly implement and support future location-based commercial applications from TCS or other vendors.
"We are extremely pleased that nTelos has elected to expand its relationship with TCS to provide services that both save lives as well as improve the quality of life on a daily basis," said Maurice B. Tose, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of TCS. "We have proven ourselves as an E9-1-1 market leader and applying our location-based technology expertise for commercial applications only makes sense. Rand McNally Navigator is an excellent example of how we can provide location technology that helps network operators such as nTelos to differentiate their service offerings, create new revenue opportunities and meet customer demand for lifestyle improvements."
TCS pioneered the world's first wireless location platform in 1996 and has since been a leader in wireless and Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) E9-1-1 in the United States. TCS' award-winning Xypoint(R) Location Platform supports commercial and mission-critical emergency location solutions for over 45 carriers worldwide. Hosted in the same TL-9000 certified, carrier-grade Network Operations Center as its trusted E9-1-1 services, TCS' Hosted Xypoint Location Services reliably meets the growing market demand for proven, precise and profitable location-based services. TCS is leading the advancement of wireless location-based technology with multiple patents in this area.
