SymbianOne Monitor - Mobile Social Networking, ready for Primetime?
Written by SymbianOne
Monday, 24 March 2008
Another bi-weekly SymbianOne Monitor newsletter has been released. In the intro from the latest edition a quicklook at Mobile social networking is revealed.
Have you noticed all the
news recently that promotes the efforts of those developers that are bringing
social networking to the masses (via mobile)? Well, indeed we have and there's
no doubt that the social networking category in the coming LBS Challenge (see CTIA Wireless 2008 in Vegas) will see some innovative social networking
apps that will likely be made widely available to mobile users and more
specifically, the Symbian OS. Case in point, just this past week, a clever facebook
application (widget) enabling Nokia Sports Tracker users to share their
tracks with their contacts via facebook... indeed its nice to see people taking
advantage of Sports Tracker and extending it's functionality.
Not to be outdone,
great news for those of you that are LinkedIn... now the popular networking
resource for professionals has a mobile client... nice! All you need to do
to access the service from your device is to jump to m.linkedIn.com and indeed
it functions just fine on the Nokia N95. So, what develop program and tools are
developers using to mobilize their social networking and location-enabled apps?
Well, one such program is from uLocate Communications - enter WHERE.
According to the company, no less than 10 semi-finalists in the recent LBS
Challenge used the WHERE Developer Program to turn creative ideas into mobile
location based applications. Some of the clever apps built on the WHERE platform
include AEN Mobile, providing Real time emergency information, and Trapster -
Report and share speed-traps and hidden cameras - this one gets the best name
award in my mind!
I could go on about the latest mobile, social apps, all of
them, now easily accessible via my handheld, including Flickr, Mosh, Blogger,
facebook, MySpace, LinkedIn, and many more - these are exciting times for us
social networking junkies!
