RedSky Technologies, a leading provider of E911 location information management solutions, today announced that its new, 3rd generation Location Information Server (LIS) has been chosen by the US Department of Transportation's Next Generation 9-1-1 (NG9-1-1) Initiative to support Proof of Concept testing of its new NG9-1-1 architecture. The announcement was made at VoiceCon Orlando 2008.

"Our 3rd generation Location Information Server determines the physical location of Voice over IP (VoIP)-enabled devices and communicates this location information back to these devices as well as to next-generation 9-1-1 network elements,” says Nicholas Maier, RedSky senior vice president. "We are proud to participate in the development of next-generation location services that will support 9-1-1 service for existing and emerging IP-based devices and next-generation wired and wireless networks." The NG9-1-1 research and development project is funded by the DOT Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office. The objective of the NG9-1-1 Proof of Concept is to test specific requirements selected from a prioritized list developed by the NG9-1-1 team with input from a variety of 9-1-1 stakeholders.

RedSky Location Information Server Chosen for NG9-1-1 Test -- 2 The nationwide test is expected to begin in April and be completed in two to three months. Following completion, the team will analyze the test data, revise the system architecture as necessary and complete the transition plan. The DOT is working with Booz Allen Hamilton as the prime contractor to develop and validate requirements for the NG9-1-1 system, define a system architecture, and develop a transition plan that considers responsibilities, costs, schedule, and benefits for deploying IP-based emergency services across America. Other members of the project team include the National Emergency Number Association, L. Robert Kimball & Associates, and Texas A&M University. The 3rd generation Location Information Server was donated by RedSky to Texas A&M University who will install the server in its Internet2 Technology Evaluation Center (ITEC) laboratory in College Station, TX.

RedSky is the leading provider of automated location information solutions for enterprises seeking to identify and track the location of callers using IP phones and other VoIP-enabled devices. RedSky software automatically tracks the location of device users via a number of standards-based location determination techniques and updates other network elements so that 9-1-1 or other emergency calls can be routed to the right Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP) while also providing call-takers with the latest and most up-to-date device location information.
