By Investing in Leading Geographic Intelligence Provider, Radar and
Satellite Offerings on AccuWeather.com and the Local AccuWeather
Channel will be Enhanced
STATE COLLEGE, PA, March 11, 2008AccuWeather, Inc. today announced it has acquired an interest in GeoMicro, Inc., a leading provider of cutting-edge GIS, LBS, and geographic intelligence solutions, as part of a broad strategic effort to provide industry-leading radar, satellite, and other user-centric images.
"This is the next step in AccuWeathers ongoing effort to integrate leading, user-centric technology in our key properties AccuWeather.com and the Local AccuWeather Channel," Barry Lee Myers, CEO of AccuWeather said. "We have a long-standing relationship with GeoMicro and through this investment we will work more closely to create experiences focused on mobile web and Internet users.
Beginning in the second quarter of 2008, AccuWeather will more closely incorporate GeoMicro's AltaMap platform to provide a backbone of worldwide geographic intelligence, allowing AccuWeather.com to dynamically generate satellite and radar images that are centered on user locations, not cut from generalized regional maps. The result will be a continuous, borderless map, available for any location on Earth. AccuWeather.com will also be able to integrate other information such as temperature, weather conditions, and storm tracks directly into mapped images, thereby providing a greater than ever level of interactivity with radar and satellite images.
The AltaMap® platform will help resize satellite and radar images for users' devices, eliminating the need to crop and shrink images to accommodate various screen sizes. The result will be the most usable, informative, and attractive images for every user and device.
"This investment by AccuWeather, the leading company in the mobile weather space is a dramatic endorsement of the innovative and robust platform that GeoMicro provides," Karim Kaddeche CTO for GeoMicro, Inc. said. "AccuWeather and GeoMicro are both companies with a history of leading-edge science and a singular focus on providing the best real-time information available anywhere. By working together, we will provide a truly differentiated user-focused experience that meets the needs of users everywhere."
