Support for Device Management and Next-Generation of RFID Standards Provides Reduced Administration, Increased Security, and Enhanced Performance

SANTA CLARA, Calif., April 18 -- Sun Microsystems, Inc. (Nasdaq: SUNW - News), today announced the availability of Sun Java(TM) System RFID Software 2.0, a key component of its RFID system strategy. Sun Java System RFID Software enhances core infrastructure technologies like Sun Java(TM) Enterprise System and Solaris(TM) 10 Operating System (OS) and simplifies the integration of RFID data from the edge of the network to enterprise application systems.

"GTSI is one of the largest technology suppliers to the Department of Defense (DoD). It was critical for us to rapidly deploy a highly available, secure, and scalable RFID system so that we could become one of the first DoD suppliers to be compliant with their RFID program," said Scott Friedlander, Group Vice President, Technology Practices, GTSI Corp. "The Sun Java System RFID Software on the Solaris OS gives us and our customers the ability to link critical shipment information to their orders. And as
more DoD sites become RFID-enabled, the system will easily scale to meet the increase transaction load."

Sun Java System RFID Software is designed to integrate with and provide services to a variety of applications through a number of standard protocols and interfaces. Through support for EPCglobal Application Level Events (ALE), Sun Java System RFID Software can filter, aggregate and process volumes of RFID data at the edge of an RFID network, delivering streamlined business information to enterprise applications and reducing network traffic. Sun Java System RFID Software is also ready for EPCglobal Generation 2 (Gen2) readers and tags, which provide faster, more secure, and more accurate reads.

"Sun is one of the first companies preparing for the next generation of RFID deployments by supporting both the latest EPCglobal standards, as well as other RFID standards such as International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and DOD. The Sun Java System RFID Software is a critical component of our RFID strategy -- providing customers with real world solutions to help address their current business issues and scale to meet future requirements," said Sam Liu, director of RFID product management Sun Microsystems, Inc. "We are expecting the new version of the Sun Java System RFID Software to lead the industry in enabling customers to reduce the complexity of their RFID deployments and to improve overall business response time."

The new version of Java System RFID Software also includes a browser-based management interface for centralized monitoring and management of RFID devices and other sensors across a distributed network. Sun Java System RFID Software helps enable safe, secure, and highly efficient supply chains by supporting RFID applications that address asset tracking, counterfeiting, tampering, and compliance requirements. Sun Java System RFID Software also integrates with third-party RFID solutions such as: SeeBeyond RFID Composite Application Network offering, a framework for unlocking the return on investment in RFID through process-driven composite applications.

Sun's RFID system strategy includes: Sun Java System RFID Software, Sun Java System RFID Tag and Ship Solution, RFID Industry Solution Architectures, global RFID test centers, Sun hardware and storage technology, global client services, and third-party alliances. Sun Java System RFID Software is optimized for the Solaris Operating System (SPARC® and x64), and is also available on Linux. For more information go to www.sun.com/rfid.
