Networks In Motion Drives More than Half of LBS Wireless Carrier Revenue in Q3 Study PDF Print E-mail

Nielsen Report Says Company Also Leads in Carrier Revenue from All Data Applications; Navigation Dominates Downloadable Applications ALISO VIEJO, Calif., Dec. 3, 2007 - According to Nielsen Mobile's recently released third-quarter Mobile Application Report on usage and revenue from wireless applications, Networks In Motion (NIM) led the location-based services (LBS) industry in the U.S. with 53 percent share of revenue* from the top four U.S. carriers in Q3. Nielsen Mobile is a division of The Nielsen Company.

In Nielsen Mobile's report released this month, location-based services grew to account for 58.2 percent of the total application revenues, up from 51.4 percent the previous quarter. The revenue-generating downloadable mobile applications that Nielsen tracked include LBS, weather applications, chat/community and personal organization tools. According to Nielsen, while LBS consist of offerings such as friend-finding and other location-aware features, navigation applications are the leading LBS applications in the U.S.

Networks In Motion, which offers navigation and local search applications on all major wireless carriers, increased five percent in Q3 to secure 31.8 percent share of carrier revenue from all mobile data applications and leads all mobile application publishers, which include TeleNav, Garmin and MapQuest.

"Unlike other market studies that focus on the number of phones shipping with an LBS application, Nielsen Mobile's Mobile Application Report focuses on the heart of the matter - real subscriptions from real people, " said Doug Antone, president and CEO of Networks In Motion. "Networks In Motion continues to lead the mobile applications market because of our unique business model, strong relationships with the wireless carriers and user-friendly applications."

"As more mobile phones and smart phones become GPS-enabled and consumers continue to become aware of the convenience of navigation on their phones, the LBS market will continue to be an important source of revenue for carriers," said David Gill, director of mobile media, Nielsen Mobile.

Networks In Motion's LBS platform delivers turn-by-turn, voice-prompted directions with auto-rerouting if a turn is missed, as well as local search of nearly 14 million points of interest and detailed color maps that can be quickly panned and zoomed. Varying by wireless carrier, the subscription typically costs $9.99 per month or $2.99 per day. Many of North America's wireless carriers' navigation and local search applications are powered by Networks In Motion's NAVBuilder platform.
