Seattle, WA-based 3Guppies extends social media sharing beyond the web
to the cell phone. US users can share their MySpace and facebook videos
and photos with friends - the 3Guppies facebook application was
recently launched and has been tested on a dozen US carriers
At the recent CTIA Wireless IT &
Entertainment event in San Francisco, 3Guppies announced the launch of
their social media sharing application targeted at facebook users.
Given that facebook attracts 200,000 new users a day this may be a
useful app down the road!
3Guppies is a relatively important application as it is one of the first mobile applications designed to extend the hugely popular facebook social media application to the mobile space.
Users in the US only at this time are
welcome to create a free account on 3Guppies. Once a profile has been
created users can then quickly create their own free moblog on the site
(this is where all your data is stored). Posting to the moblog is
accomplished by sending a simple SMS message from a mobile to a special
email
address - your mobile number must first be validated as a registered
user and associated with your account. Alternatively, users can upload
via PC. Log-in, then simply upload any media file (photo, video, sound
clip etc...) from the user post to moblog pane.
upload photos or videos to your moblog account
3Guppies also integrates with MySpace and has a widget available for MySpace users.
If ring tones is your cup of tea then
users can easily create custom ring tones from a pre-selected number of
popular songs.. please note that this is a pay-for service. Select a
song from a popular list or by genre, listen to a preview, then send to
phone. the plan is priced as follows:
$13.99 for 6 months for 5 MusicTones, plus unlimited polyphonic tones and screensavers or a One-Time Purchase of $1.99 each.
The picture uploading application is
quite cool. Users simply upload an image from PC, click the send to
phone button, then the picture can be cropped or resized in order to
fit your favorite mobile device...
unfortunately the number of supported devices is rather limited. For
example, I use an unlocked Nokia N95 on T-Mobile, however, since
T-mobile doesn't officially support this or many other S60 3rd edition
devices it's not listed. This means I can't resize images to fit the
screen size perfectly... too bad! As an alternative I've been testing
with my profile setup as a Nokia 7610 user. Resize the photo then send
to phone.
Share your content with your own mobile or someone else, simply send to phone
If your interested in something free
from the application, 3Guppies enables users to send text messages to
any mobile device user for free.. simply use the PC application, enter
the message and send... a nice offering to the community of users.
Send free text messages to your friends using the PC UI
Finally, the part of the application
that got my attention is the new facebook add-on. A simple search on
facebook for "3guppies" reveals a link where registered users can add
the application to their account. Once installed, the user can then
access all the functionality of 3Guppies via facebook. What this means
is in addition to loading video and images from the PC or phone, users
can send their facebook photos to their 3Guppies locker or cell phone
from within facebook. Select a photo, crop it to create a perfect
wallpaper, then send.
From within facebook users can send one of their photos to their mobile... resize and create a perfect wallpaper
A handy interface enables you to resize the image or crop where you want to create a wallpaper
