SINGAPORE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Shipments of navigation devices worldwide
will continue to increase from 2007 to 2012, with a compound annual
growth rate (CAGR) of 22.5%, according to a new forecast from ABI
Research.
Europe will command a 53% share of the global market in 2007, and will remain the primary navigation devices market throughout the forecast period. However the Asian market shows the most rapid growth with a CAGR of 27%.
Sales of personal navigation devices (PNDs) have increased rapidly in recent years. More than 29 million PNDs will have been shipped during 2007, thanks to high growth rates in both North American and European markets. In-car navigation systems are the major navigation products in Asian markets due to the high penetration rate of OEMs in Japan. However, says research analyst Wang Tao, with the development of location-based services (LBS), more and more value-added navigation services have been launched with GPS-enabled PDAs and smartphones. PNDs will face a new challenge coming from GPS-enabled mobile devices. In 2012, GPS-enabled PDAs and smartphones will comprise 23% of all navigation device shipments.
Research director Mike Ippoliti adds, The PND form-factor has many advantages, and will not be pushed aside by handset-based navigation services.
