vCurrent® Mobile Brings High Performance Firmware Updating to Users of Handsets with Latest Symbian OS Release

LONDON, UK – The Symbian Smartphone Show – October 16, 2007—Red Bend Software, the market leader in Mobile Software Management and Firmware-Over-the-Air (FOTA) updating solutions for mobile devices, today announced support for the latest available Symbian OS release, Symbian OS v9.4, with Demand Paging. Red Bend's vCurrent® Mobile offers handset manufacturers that license Symbian OS v9.4 the benefit of even faster update times when delivering over-the-air software improvements and new features to consumers' smartphones. Symbian OS is the market leading open operating system for advanced, data-enabled mobile phones known as smartphones.

With Demand Paging, Symbian OS v9.4 optimizes memory utilization which enables even more efficient usage of RAM by loading read-only code and data only when required ("on demand”). This allows consumers to launch applications faster and keep multiple applications open simultaneously.

"With vCurrent Mobile currently shipping on phones based on all versions of Symbian OS, Red Bend is already the leading provider of mobile software management solutions to the Symbian ecosystem,” said Yoram Salinger, CEO of Red Bend Software. "FOTA has become essential to handset vendors' strategy as it offers fast and easy software updates for all mobile phones and specifically for smartphones because smartphone consumers expect to have the latest features and services. vCurrent Mobile with support for Demand Paging will further enhance the Symbian smartphone user experience.”

Working with Symbian and its customers, the leading handset manufacturers in the world, Red Bend has significantly improved firmware update performance in devices that are based on Symbian OS. Red Bend has optimized the update process to be nine times faster without requiring additional flash memory or affecting the use of compression. The result is especially beneficial to smartphones containing 50MB software or more as Red Bend's optimization reduces firmware update time to less than five minutes.

"Demand Paging increases performance and reduces RAM usage, allowing consumers to take full advantage of Symbian OS device feature richness and multi-tasking, and allowing device manufacturers to reduce component cost,” said Jørgen Behrens, Executive Vice President of Marketing, Symbian. "Red Bend's concurrent development of vCurrent Mobile with Symbian OS Demand Paging capability demonstrates how Symbian is committed to working closely with innovative partners that complement Symbian OS and help us make the mobile software platform delivered to our customers even more competitive.”

Red Bend's vCurrent Mobile enables mobile phone manufacturers and operators to update firmware over-the-air. The patented software identifies the essential changes from an existing version of firmware to a new, updated version. vCurrent Mobile, which has been adopted by the world's leading mobile phone manufacturers in more than 200 million handsets, generates extremely compact firmware updates that can be rapidly and cost-effectively delivered onto the handset with 100% accuracy. vCurrent Mobile version 5, released in July, significantly improves the user experience as the first FOTA software that gives manufacturers and operators the ability to update mobile phone firmware while a consumer is using the phone.
