US Department of Defense selects eSpatial to extend MilitaryHOMEFRONT LBS Application PDF Print E-mail
Written by eSpatial
Tuesday, 25 September 2007

Washington DC, 25th September 2007, eSpatial, a leading Enterprise Geospatial software and technology company today announced it has been selected to further enhance and extend the MilitaryHOMEFRONT LBS application with the US DoD.

The Under Secretary of Defense, Personnel & Readiness, Military Community & Family Policy first launched the MilitaryHOMEFRONT web-based central point of access in August 2006 to assist service members and their families to better understand available services and facilities around military bases worldwide.

Since its launch the MilitaryHOMEFRONT has become a core component of the services offered by the DoD to service personnel and is available from any internet browser and mobile devices. The application assists the military community to locate, learn about, and travel to a variety of Programs and Services located on over 250 military installations worldwide.  For example, users can route from an airport to a specific service on a base by using their everyday mobile device.  They can then locate “points of interest” such as banks, ATM’s, restaurants, museums etc that are situated around the base.

Under the new contract eSpatial will work with the DoD to further extend and enhance the service to provide additional capabilities. These include enhanced navigation and searching, links to additional information and the possible provision of Satellite imagery for selected areas.

The MilitaryINSTALLATIONS application has been developed using eSpatial’s iSMART product on an Oracle 10g Spatial platform including locations services. Worldwide data for the system is provided using NAVTEQ’s Streets and “Points of Interest” (POI) dataset. This dataset has been augmented with additional application specific data related to the available base services, plus links to associated websites and additional information.

Philip O’Doherty, CEO eSpatial, “eSpatial is very pleased to have been selected by DoD to further enhance the MilitaryHOMEFRONT application. This system is a great example of how Geospatial information can be used to deliver controlled and useful information using an intuitive interface to a wide audience over the web.”

“We are excited about the capabilities this system has already provided us with making it one of the most visited sites we host” said Lieutenant Colonel R. Lao, Program Manager, “We look forward to further extending and enhancing the application to provide even greater value to our troops and their families”

The MilitaryHOMEFRONT application can be accessed over the internet at: (www.militaryhomefront.dod.mil or www.militaryinstallations.dod.mil). A mobile version of the application is available at: (http://militaryinstallations.dod.mil/mobile/).
