The London Clinic chooses Ekahau RTLS to track valuable assets
Helsinki --- February 16, 2007 --- The London Clinic, one of the UKs most established independent hospitals has selected Ekahau to safeguard valuable medical equipment using its Real Time Tracking Solution (RTLS). The hospital which has established a reputation for top class healthcare and state-of-the-art technological solutions has built up an extensive Wi-Fi network to ensure that information flows smoothly around the hospital premises. In addition to Internet access and VoIP capabilities, the standard Wi-Fi network from Trapeze Networks will also provide the backbone to run Ekahaus RTLS to track high value medical equipment that is easily lost, or worse, stolen from the hospitals premises.
IT Director for The London Clinic, Mike Roberts explained that a solution was needed that leveraged the benefits of a standard 802.11 network and still delivered high accuracy for tracking medical equipment. A pilot system was successfully delivered by Ekahau reseller, European Electronique Ltd, in December 2006 including the provision of a RTLS accurately calibrated to the hospitals Wi-Fi and 100 Ekahau T201 tracking tags.
Speaking about the Ekahau solution, Mike Roberts said: "The London Clinic is a 1930s construction full of nooks and crannies, which creates a challenge for any Wi-Fi network to function. That said, the pilot has demonstrated the technology works well. The Ekahau solution will save us time and money by managing assets that have had a high turnover typically such items as syringe pumps and Blood-gas monitors."
Following the pilots successful implementation, the aim is to expand the number of tags to 500 and ultimately to incorporate the locating of patients and coordinate the movement of duty porters. Centralised monitoring of patients, staff and resources ultimately means better utilisation of assets and greater security and facilitation of movement for everyone within The London Clinic.
Mr Roberts explained that over the next few years The London Clinic would be expanding to other premises in the Harley Street district and that Wi-Fi and Ekahaus RTLS would play a key role in ensuring greater control over resources and people.
"Ekahau know about medical solutions for their system and have clearly thought about the use of tags in that environment. Using Ekahau gives us a fourth dimension to work with," he concluded.
