Historic Traffic Data is the Basis for Predicting Traffic Behavior and Enhancing Routes
CHICAGO, Jan. 5-- NAVTEQ (NYSE: NVT), a leading global provider of digital maps for vehicle navigation and location-based solutions is announcing the immediate availability of NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns(TM), a database of typical traffic speeds on over 170,000 miles of primary and secondary roads across major US cities, including interconnecting highways. Application developers, fleet operators, automotive OEMs and device manufacturers may now use this information to further enhance the quality of navigation routing.
"The ability to see patterns in traffic creates opportunities for application developers to offer enhanced routing features for end users of navigation products without adding wireless communications capabilities. For example, if you know over the past several years a particular segment of road is typically slow between 9 and 10 am, you can begin to predict what might happen tomorrow. By knowing the pattern, you can suggest alternate driving routes much more confidently," said Howard Hayes, Vice President of Dynamic Content.
This new product delivers useful, accurate and typically attainable speeds for primary and secondary roads (function classes one through three) in major cities across the U.S. Historical observations from GPS probe data are aggregated, verified then matched to TMC (Traffic Message Channel) codes on the NAVTEQ(R) map.
"By matching the data to location markers on our map and driving thousands of miles of roads to test for accuracy, NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns stands out from the crowd," added Hayes.
NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns gives product developers and service providers a reliable, easy-to-use data set for a variety of smart-routing applications. Those applications will put at drivers' fingertips the information they need to decide when and how to avoid typically congested areas. From commuters to emergency service providers, NAVTEQ Traffic Patterns will:
-- Enable more accurate route planning
-- Improve trip time estimates based on likely traffic conditions
-- Provide an enhanced routing experience
